SPEAR hydro is a renewable energy hydro power plant that provides clean and stable electricity by harnessing the natural flow of rivers. It is first-of-its-kind solution using a mechanical system of fins located underneath an anchored floating barge. The technology is suitable to be deployed in city centers on any navigable river allowing shipping. Unlike other renewables such solar and wind, SPEAR hydro is a stable source of energy and offers quite an advantage as it is a free-flow, plug and play system with no damage to the ecosystem. SPEAR hydro has offers an open deck for real-estate, commercial or biodiversity options.
SPEAR technology uses internationally patented mechanical system of slow-moving, durable fins propelled by a river stream. Fins are connected to standard generators that produce electricity. Unlike common propellers and turbines, fins don’t clog, can withstand debris, and are safe for wildlife.
These unique characteristics allow long-term deployment in free flow environments that was not possible until now. The technology is installed in a modified river shipping barge and can be towed in and transported to any navigable river. The anchored power plant can be plugged into a local grid network or can be used to charge batteries situated in the hull. The entire system is scalable and modular, being able to provide an output with the maximum nameplate capacity of 190kW.
International patent application WIPO PCT WO2017082832A1 was published on May 18, 2017 with the US patent application approved on May 26, 2020. Other countries and the EU are expected to follow in 2021-2022.
